The Algarve has been Europe's favourite golf destination for decades, and for good reason. With over 300 days of sunshine a year, more than 40 courses packed into a 150km coastal stretch, and green fees that undercut Spain and France significantly, it offers a combination of quality, value, and climate that's hard to beat. Here's everything you need to plan an Algarve golf trip.
Why the Algarve?
The numbers tell the story: 40+ courses, year-round sunshine, green fees from €40, and Faro airport served by direct flights from across Europe. But what makes the Algarve special is the variety. Within an hour's drive you'll find dramatic clifftop courses, parkland layouts through pine and cork forests, resort courses with immaculate conditioning, and challenging championship venues that have hosted European Tour events.
The food is outstanding — fresh fish, grilled meats, and local wines at prices that seem almost impossible. The people are friendly, English is widely spoken, and the pace of life is exactly right for a golf holiday.
The Must-Play Courses
Monte Rei (Jack Nicklaus Course)
The Algarve's crown jewel and regularly ranked among Europe's best. The Nicklaus design flows through undulating terrain in the eastern Algarve with views to the Serra do Caldeirão mountains. Conditioning is immaculate. Green fees are steep (€250+) but the experience justifies the cost.
Quinta do Lago (South Course)
A Ryder Cup venue and one of the Algarve's most established courses. The South Course threads through umbrella pines with the Ria Formosa nature reserve as a backdrop. The par-3 15th, played across a lake, is the signature hole.
San Lorenzo
Consistently rated among Portugal's best, San Lorenzo is set within the Quinta do Lago estate overlooking the Ria Formosa lagoon. The course is beautifully routed with water features, pines, and the estuary creating a gorgeous setting. Advance booking is essential.
Vilamoura (Old Course)
The grand dame of Algarve golf, the Old Course was designed by Frank Pennink in 1969 and renovated by Martin Hawtree. Tall umbrella pines line every fairway, creating a cathedral-like atmosphere. The course is a classic — no gimmicks, just pure golf architecture.
Amendoeira (Faldo Course)
Nick Faldo's design in the hills behind Silves is a stern test with dramatic elevation changes. The views from the elevated tees are spectacular, and the course rewards strategic play over raw power.
Palmares
A newer entry that's rapidly gaining fans, Palmares sits between Lagos and the ocean with cliff-edge holes that rival anything in the Algarve. The front nine along the coast is genuinely spectacular.
Where to Base Yourself
Vilamoura is the most popular base, with five courses within the resort, a marina lined with restaurants, and easy access to Faro airport (25 minutes). It's the safest choice for a first visit.
Quinta do Lago / Vale do Lobo is the luxury option — upscale resorts, multiple courses on your doorstep, and a quieter atmosphere than Vilamoura.
Lagos is the best choice if you want to combine golf with a more authentic Portuguese town experience. The old town is charming, the food is outstanding, and Palmares and several other courses are nearby.
Tavira / Eastern Algarve is where you'll find Monte Rei and some less-crowded courses. It's quieter and more traditional, with beautiful unspoiled coastline.
When to Go
- Peak season (October-November, March-May): Best conditions, busiest courses, highest prices. Temperatures of 18-25°C are perfect for golf.
- Summer (June-August): Hot (30-35°C). Courses are quieter and cheaper. Play early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat.
- Winter (December-February): Mild (12-18°C) with occasional rain. Green fees are at their lowest, and courses are empty. Many golfers consider this the best time.
What It Costs
The Algarve is excellent value compared to other European destinations:
- Green fees: €40-€150 for most courses. Monte Rei and San Lorenzo are €200+. Many courses offer twilight rates from €30.
- Accommodation: €60-€150/night for apartment rentals and mid-range hotels. Luxury resorts from €200.
- Flights: €30-€150 from UK and European cities on budget airlines. Faro is well served.
- Car rental: €20-€40/day. Useful but not essential if you're based in Vilamoura.
- Food: €15-€30 for a full meal with wine at a local restaurant.
A week of golf in the Algarve — including flights, accommodation, four rounds, car rental, and meals — can realistically be done for €1,200-€1,800 per person from the UK.
Practical Tips
- Book a package. Golf tour operators offer excellent value on Algarve packages that bundle tee times, accommodation, and transfers.
- Rent clubs if flying budget. Several courses offer high-quality rental sets for €30-€50, saving you checked baggage fees and hassle.
- Eat where the locals eat. The tourist restaurants near the marina are fine, but the family-run places a few streets back serve better food for half the price.
- Try the local wine. Algarve wines have improved dramatically and cost a fraction of what you'd pay in France or Spain.
- Don't skip the non-golf days. The coastline is stunning — take a boat trip to the grottoes near Lagos, walk the clifftop paths at Carvoeiro, or simply find a quiet beach.
The Algarve isn't flashy or fashionable. It's a place that delivers exactly what it promises: great golf, great weather, great food, and great value. For a European golf trip, it's hard to beat.
