Golf Trip Packing List: Everything You Need

Links Marker7 min readMarch 18, 2026

Packing for a golf trip is a balancing act. Bring too much and you're wrestling oversized bags through airports. Bring too little and you're buying a $60 rain jacket from the pro shop at 7am. Here's the definitive list — refined over dozens of trips — to get it right.

The Big Decision: Ship, Rent, or Carry?

Before you pack a single item, decide what to do with your clubs:

Carry your own clubs. The best option if you're driving or don't mind airline golf bag fees ($35-$75 each way on most carriers). Get a proper travel bag with wheels and internal padding. Hard cases offer more protection; soft cases are lighter and easier to store.

Ship your clubs. Services like Ship Sticks and Luggage Forward will transport your clubs door-to-course for $50-$150 each way (domestic) or $200-$400 (international). Eliminates airport hassle and includes insurance. Worth it for international trips.

Rent at the course. Modern rental sets (Callaway, TaylorMade, Titleist) are available at most resort courses for $30-$75. The quality is surprisingly good. Best for: budget airline trips where baggage fees exceed rental costs, or when you want to travel ultra-light.

Golf Clothing (5-7 Day Trip)

Pack fewer items than you think. You can rewear base layers and mix-and-match tops:

  • 3-4 golf shirts/polos. Quick-dry, breathable fabrics. Rotate and air-dry overnight.
  • 2 pairs of golf trousers/shorts. One pair can do two rounds if conditions are dry.
  • 1 rain jacket. Non-negotiable, even in desert destinations. A good golf rain jacket (Gore-Tex or similar) is the single most important item for links golf.
  • 1 wind layer. A light pullover or vest for cool mornings. Merino wool is ideal — warm when wet, doesn't smell.
  • 1 warm mid-layer. Fleece or down vest for cold-weather destinations.
  • Golf shoes. One pair is usually sufficient. Waterproof is essential for links golf. Spikeless shoes dry faster and double as casual shoes.
  • 5-7 pairs of socks. Merino wool golf socks. Worth the investment for comfort and blister prevention.
  • 1 golf glove + 1 spare. Gloves wear out faster in wet conditions.
  • Hat/cap + beanie. Sun protection plus warmth for early mornings.

Golf Gear

  • Golf bag (if bringing clubs). Travel cover with padding.
  • Balls. Bring more than you think. A dozen for a 4-round trip is the minimum. Links courses eat golf balls.
  • Tees, divot tool, ball marker. Small but easy to forget.
  • Rangefinder or GPS. Essential on unfamiliar courses. Check that the course allows them (most do).
  • Rain gloves. If playing links golf, bring a pair of wet-weather gloves. They grip better in the rain than regular gloves.
  • Umbrella. A compact golf umbrella fits in most travel bags.

Non-Golf Clothing

You're on holiday — you'll need clothes for dinners, sightseeing, and travel days:

  • 2-3 casual shirts/tops. Golf polos double as casual wear in a pinch.
  • 1 pair of jeans or casual trousers.
  • 1 pair of casual shoes. Trainers or loafers. If your golf shoes are spikeless, these might not be necessary.
  • Underwear. One per day plus a spare. Merino wool travels well.
  • Swimwear. If your destination has a pool or beach.
  • 1 smart option. A collared shirt and chinos cover most restaurant dress codes.

Accessories and Essentials

  • Sunscreen (SPF 50). Apply before the round and reapply at the turn. You're outside for 4-5 hours.
  • Sunglasses. Polarised lenses reduce glare and help read greens.
  • Water bottle. Reusable, collapsible. Stay hydrated.
  • Snacks. Energy bars, nuts, dried fruit. Not every course has an on-course snack bar.
  • Small first-aid kit. Plasters for blisters, ibuprofen, antihistamines.
  • Travel adapter. Check your destination's plug type.
  • Portable phone charger. GPS apps drain batteries fast.
  • Ziplock bags. For wet items, valuables in rain, dirty laundry.

Packing Tips

  1. Roll, don't fold. Golf clothes are stretchy and roll compactly. Saves space and reduces wrinkles.
  2. Wear your heaviest items on the plane. Golf shoes, rain jacket, and warm layer on travel days save significant bag space.
  3. Pack a laundry bag. Keep dirty clothes separate. Some hotels offer same-day laundry.
  4. Put valuables in your carry-on. Rangefinder, wallet, phone, medication — never in checked luggage.
  5. Leave room for souvenirs. You will buy something from the pro shop. Everyone does.
  6. Photograph your bag contents before you leave. Useful for insurance claims if bags are lost.
  7. What to Leave Behind

    • Extra pairs of golf shoes (one pair is enough)
    • Full-size toiletries (buy at the destination or use hotel supplies)
    • More than 2 books (use a Kindle)
    • Formal wear (unless you're playing a club with a strict dress code)
    • Anxiety about looking perfect — you're on a golf trip, not a fashion shoot

The goal is to arrive relaxed and ready to play, not exhausted from hauling luggage. Pack light, pack smart, and save space for the memories.
